Who We Are

This website seeks to support young people, youth workers, wider youth support service professionals as well as parents and wider community members with an overview of Cardiff Youth Service and its wider youth support service partners. We will produce content with young people and partners that seeks to inform, support and educate young people in issues that affect their lives.

About Us

Cardiff Youth Service are part of Cardiff Council’s Education department. We work with young people aged 11-25 to develop personal, social and educational development through a variety of opportunities. We do this in communities through participatory experiences and offer information, support and guidance to enable young people to reach their unique full potential. We work with young people in a variety of settings offering both universal and, for those identified as vulnerable, targeted support.

Our youth workers and youth support workers are a nationally qualified, registered workforce. Children’s rights and the UNCRC is embedded in all of the work we do, with regular consultations occuring on an ongoing basis. Cardiff council are committed to a partnership with UNICEF to make Cardiff a child-friendly city .

Our engagement with young people takes place in youth centres, youth clubs, on the street (where young people are!), in schools, and in communities. We also engage in digital spaces, and you can follow our various social media channels to find out more. We are committed to collaboration and forming partnerships in communities throughout Cardiff. Contact us to find out more.

What is Youth Work?

The aim of Youth Work is to enable young people to develop holistically, working with them to facilitate their personal, social and educational development, to enable them to develop their voice, influence and place in society and to reach their full potential. This is the definition of youth work outlined within the National Occupational Standards.

However, Youth Work is more than a range of statements or commitments. Youth Work is based on the ability to develop and maintain working relationships with young people. The fundamental starting point is the voluntary relationship and ensuring young people are actively participating in the co-production of any work undertaken with them. The Principles and Purposes of Youth Work outline five pillars; educative, empowering, participative, inclusive and expressive, these are further clarified in the following link.

Most importantly, Youth Work is different things to different young people. Some young people access to have fun and meet friends. Some young people access for specific information support and guidance, other young people access to learn new skills, all young people are welcome.
